Downloading Files

Downloading files from GolemDrive is straightforward. Click, wait a moment, and your file appears on your computer — already decrypted and ready to use.

Find the file you want and click the Download button (the downward arrow icon). GolemDrive fetches the encrypted file, then unscrambles it right there in your browser. Once it’s ready, the file saves to your usual downloads folder.

This means the file is never stored unencrypted on our servers. The decryption happens entirely on your device.

Need a whole folder? Right-click the folder and choose Download. GolemDrive gathers all the files inside (including subfolders) and downloads them for you with the folder structure intact.

Select several files at once (hold Ctrl or Cmd while clicking), then hit the download button. They’ll queue up and download one after another without you needing to babysit the process.

If you need to pause a download — maybe you’re about to hop on a video call or your connection is getting shaky — you can pause it and pick it back up later. No need to start over from scratch.

When you download a file, here’s what actually happens:

  1. GolemDrive fetches the encrypted file from the server
  2. Your browser decrypts it using your encryption key (which never leaves your device)
  3. The decrypted file is saved to your computer

The whole process usually takes just a few seconds for normal-sized files. Larger files take a bit longer since there’s more to decrypt.

  • Check your browser’s download folder. Files save to whatever location your browser normally uses for downloads.
  • Large files take a moment. Because the file needs to be decrypted in your browser, very large files might take a few extra seconds before the download prompt appears. That’s normal.
  • Stay on the page. Keep the GolemDrive tab open while downloading. The decryption runs in your browser, so closing the tab interrupts it.
